Key takeaway

You do the mornings, and someone at the table just said the drinking is not your business. The word stepparent landed like a shove. You live in this house. You packed the lunches. You know which kid hates the crusts. And someone at this table just told you the drinking is not your business, because you are not the "real" parent. The word landed in your chest. You are sitting in a house you pay for, or a house you hold together, and you have been told to keep your mouth shut.

You can leave the table. You do not have to win the definition of family before you get help.

You already live inside it

The drinking reaches the person who does the mornings. It reaches the person who hears the fight through the wall. Al-Anon is for families and friends affected by someone else's drinking. Friends count. A marriage license is not a bouncer. You can get help whether or not they seek help, and whether or not the rest of the table agrees you belong.

If children are watching, stop the fight in front of them. SAMHSA's booklet for families says a child did not cause someone's substance use. You can tell them, later and briefly, that the adult tension is not their fault. The kids guide helps with how much to say. Adult detail stays with adults.

If the house is unsafe, call 911. If you want to hurt yourself, call or text 988.

If you also drink, and the desire to stop is yours too, A.A. membership asks for that desire. If you are sick from a sudden stop after heavy drinking, call 911. NIAAA says that kind of withdrawal can be life-threatening. Al-Anon and A.A. are different rooms. You can need one, or both.

A chair that does not ask for your paperwork

Electronic Al-Anon meetings are listed by day and time. You can keep the camera off and listen. You do not have to explain the word stepparent unless you want to. What Al-Anon is and the finder will get you to a room. The search on this site is another start. Confirm the listing. These are not verified here.

If someone in the house wants treatment, FindTreatment.gov lists programs. Call (800) 653-9376 for help finding treatment. The call is free to you. Treatment providers pay for the referral. The line is not Al-Anon, it is not A.A., and it is not SMART Recovery.

Leave the table if you need to

You do not have to finish the debate. Check on the kids, then find a meeting and listen. The mornings you already do are proof you are in this. Nobody at that table gets to vote you out of help.

Common Questions

Do I qualify if I am not the birth parent?

Friends count, and so do people who married into the drinking. Al-Anon is for families and friends whose lives have been affected by someone else's drinking. You do not need a birth certificate or their permission. You can get help whether or not they seek help.

What if the children are watching the argument?

You can stop the fight in front of them and talk later. SAMHSA's family booklet says a child did not cause a parent's substance use. You can tell a child, in a short sentence, that the adult tension is not their fault. Save the adult detail for adults.

Can I go to a meeting without telling the whole family?

Yes. You can look up an electronic meeting and listen with the camera off. You do not have to announce the fellowship at dinner. If the house is unsafe, call 911 before you worry about privacy.

What if I drink too, and I am also scared for them?

You can need Al-Anon for their drinking and A.A. for your own. A.A. asks for a desire to stop drinking. If you are sick from a sudden stop after heavy drinking, call 911. NIAAA says that withdrawal can be life-threatening.
