A Siren, and You Checked

You heard a siren and checked your phone to see if it was them. The leap in your body is the hurt. Call 911 only if the danger is real.

Key takeaway

You heard a siren and your hand went to your phone before you could think, checking whether it was them. That leap is the hurt. You can put the phone down once you know it is not the emergency you imagined. If you actually have reason to think they are dying, call 911. Al-Anon is for the fear that stays.

A siren went by and your hand was on the phone before you decided to look. You were checking whether it was them. Your stomach got there first. The truck is already down the block, and you are still standing in the kitchen with your heart too high, waiting for a text that would prove the night is ordinary.

That leap is the hurt. You are not ridiculous for having it. You have been living in a house, or a love, where sirens became personal. You can put the phone down after you know they are not in the emergency you just invented. If you actually have a reason to think they are dying, call 911. Those are different moments. Do not mash them together.

Let the fear have its own room

You do not have to diagnose them from the sound of a truck. You do not have to call them five times to make your body climb down. If you already looked and they are fine, stop looking. Wash a cup. Sit.

If someone else's drinking is the life you are braced against, Al-Anon is for you. You can look for help whether or not they admit a problem or want help. Electronic meetings can be searched by day and time. Camera off. You can say you are just listening. The meeting finder is there if a building feels better than a kitchen. If the fear is about drugs, Nar-Anon is the fellowship for relatives and friends.

The Three Cs are blunt because the siren is not: you did not cause it, you cannot control it, and you cannot cure it. A meeting will not turn off every truck in the city. It can give the next hour somewhere to go that is not their location dot.

If you are the one who wants to die, call or text 988. A family meeting is not medical care. If they are actually overdosing or not breathing, 911 comes before any fellowship.

When you can talk and you want a treatment referral, call (800) 653-9376. The call is free to you. Treatment providers pay for the referral.

Common Questions

Does checking the phone mean I am failing?

It means your body learned a siren could be them. That is a wound, not a grade. You can notice you checked and still put the phone down when you see they are not in the emergency you built. You do not have to punish yourself for a reflex.

When should I actually call 911?

When you have a real reason to think someone is dying or in danger, not because a siren passed the block. If you know they are not breathing, hurt, or missing in a way that is an emergency, call. If you only have the sound of a truck going by, you can let the truck go.

I cannot tell if I am overreacting.

Do not diagnose them from a sidewalk. If the facts you have are an emergency, call 911. If the facts you have are a siren and a habit, put the phone face down and get to an Al-Anon meeting. You are allowed to be unsure and still choose the smaller action.

Where do I put this fear tonight?

Al-Anon is for people affected by someone else's drinking. You can go whether or not they want help. Electronic meetings let you keep the camera off and listen. If drugs are the problem in the house, look at Nar-Anon. You do not have to explain the siren to strangers at the laundry.

The fear is about me, not them.

If you want to hurt yourself, call or text 988. If you are in danger, call 911. A meeting can come after you are safe. You do not have to decide what the siren 'meant' before you ask for help. The body leap is enough information for one night.
