Key takeaway
You heard your sponsee share something they have not told you, or you realized other people could hear a story you thought was private. Anonymity is the point of the room. Do not confront them in the parking lot tonight. You can talk later, kindly, and you can keep what you heard where you heard it.

You heard it from across the room. Your sponsee said something they have never said to you, or you heard your own story land in a room that was bigger than you thought. The coffee is still bad. People are looking at their hands. You are hot in the face and you want to fix it before anyone reaches the door.
Do not do it in the parking lot tonight. A confrontation out by the cars will feel like getting caught, even if you meant it as care. Let them get to their car. You can talk later, when your voice is kinder than it is right now.
What you keep
Meetings sometimes read a reminder that anonymity is a privacy the room depends on. The Traditions put anonymity at the center of how people stay safe enough to speak. You do not repeat what you heard to a friend on the way home. You do not text a third person "you will not believe." If it was your story, you still do not owe the sidewalk a recap.
Closed meetings are for people with a desire to stop drinking. Open meetings can include visitors. Either way, what was said in the chair is not material for the parking lot. You can be hurt that they told the room first. Hurt is allowed. A scene is not required.
Later, if you still need to say something, try a small sentence. "I heard you. I am here when you want to talk." Then stop. They may not want to repeat it. You can live with knowing.
If what you heard means someone is in danger tonight, call 911. That is different from a secret that embarrassed you. If you are the one who feels unsafe after speaking, tell a person you trust or call 911. If you want to hurt yourself, call or text 988.
The meeting is not treatment. You are not their clinician because you sponsor them. Get yourself home. If you need a chair that is not this one, you can listen somewhere else.
If you want a treatment referral, call (800) 653-9376. The call is free to you. Treatment providers pay for the referral.

Common Questions
Should I pull them aside in the parking lot?
Not tonight. They just spoke, or you just realized the room was listening, and a confrontation by the cars will feel like a trap. Go home. If you need to say something, say it later, when you are both less raw. You can keep what you heard without making them pay for saying it.
What if they told the room and not me?
People tell a room a thing before they tell one person. It stings. You can be honest later: 'I heard you, and I am here when you want to say it to me.' You do not have to demand the story again tonight. You also do not repeat it to anyone else.
Can I tell another member what I heard?
No. Anonymity means you do not carry their story out of the room, and you do not pass it around inside the room either. What you heard stays with you. If you are scared they are in danger, that is a different call. Danger goes to 911, not to gossip.
What if I was the one who shared too much?
You can stop talking. You can leave. Next time you can only listen. People in the room are asked not to carry what they hear outside. If you feel unsafe because of what you said, tell someone you trust or call 911. You do not have to explain yourself in the doorway.
I am shaken and I want more help than this.
Go to a meeting of your own if you need a chair that is not about them. Keep what you heard. If the night has you wanting to hurt yourself, call or text 988. If you are unsafe, call 911. You can be shaken and still go home without a scene in the parking lot.
