Key takeaway
You brought a friend who is still drinking. Open meetings allow observers. Closed meetings are for members, or for people with a desire to stop. If your friend is only watching, an open meeting fits. You can still be at a meeting for yourself tonight.

They are in the next chair, or still in the passenger seat with the meeting door in sight. You know they drank before you left the house. You asked them to come because you did not want to walk in alone, and now the aloneness has turned into a different fear. You might be in the wrong kind of room. You might be using them as armor. You still want to stop.
You can sort the room without sorting their whole life.
If they are only watching, choose open
Open meetings are for anyone interested in the program. Nonalcoholics may attend as observers. Closed meetings are for members, or for people with a drinking problem and a desire to stop drinking. If your friend is only watching you, an open meeting fits. A closed meeting is the wrong audience hall.
Look at the listing. If it does not say, ask the chair before the shares start. You can ask in the hall. You do not have to tell your friend's story to ask which kind of meeting this is. There is a guide for bringing a family member to an open meeting. A friend who came to watch can use that same door. They can sit and listen. They should not perform your drinking for the room.
You can still be there for you. If this room is closed and they are only along for company, they can wait somewhere safe, or you can leave together and find an open meeting. Your desire to stop does not get postponed until their role is perfect. You are welcome on the strength of that desire. There are no dues. You can listen without a speech. Identifying yourself is not mandatory, for you or for them.
If the drinking is theirs, and so is the desire
Still drinking is not the same fact as having no desire to stop. If your friend wants to stop, they are not only your guest. A closed meeting can be their meeting too. Going to a meeting after drinking is allowed when the desire is real. Whether someone who has been drinking speaks is the group's format. They can listen. You do not have to coach their share in the parking lot.
Do not spend your hour trying to make them quit. That project has already exhausted you, and the chair will not finish it. Tradition Five says each group has but one primary purpose, to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers. Your friend gets their own chair, or an observer's chair, and you get yours. Those can be the same room when the meeting is open, or when both of you actually want to stop.
If they are medically in trouble, confused, vomiting, unable to breathe, or at risk of seizure, call 911 before anyone finds a seat. NIAAA says withdrawal can be life-threatening when heavy drinking over time stops suddenly. NIDA says a group like this is not treatment. A folding chair is a bad clinic.
aa.org does not contain a meeting finder. When you look for an open meeting, confirm the word open and the time. Listings on this site are not verified.
Tonight
If they are only watching, put the pair of you in an open meeting, or take your own chair and let them wait safely. If they want to stop, they can be in the room on their own desire, even if they drank today. You can listen for yourself either way. You brought them. You do not have to disappear behind them.
Call (800) 653-9376 when the next step is treatment, not another hour of white-knuckling. The call is free to you. Treatment providers pay for the referral. Call or text 988 if you might hurt yourself. Call 911 if you are in danger.

Common Questions
Can I bring a friend who is still drinking?
You can bring them to an open meeting if they are there to watch. Open meetings are for anyone interested, and nonalcoholics may attend as observers. A closed meeting is for members, or for people with a drinking problem and a desire to stop drinking. Check the listing for the word open or closed before you walk in. If the listing is silent, ask the chair before anyone shares.
What if they only came to watch me?
Then an open meeting is the fit. Watching you is not the same as having a desire to stop. A closed room is the wrong room for an audience. You can still go for yourself. They can sit beside you at an open meeting and listen. There is a guide to bringing a family member into an open meeting. A friend who is only observing can use the same kind of room.
What if they drank today but want to stop?
Then they are not only an audience. A desire to stop drinking is the membership line, and drinking earlier today does not erase it. A closed meeting can be for them on their own account. Whether someone who has been drinking speaks is that group's format. They can listen. You can listen. Talk about the difference before you arrive if you can, so nobody is surprised at the door.
Can I still get a meeting if they should not be in this one?
Yes. You can still be there for you. If you walked into a closed meeting and they are only watching, step back out and find an open one, or let them wait somewhere safe while you sit in this room for yourself. You do not have to skip your own hour to avoid an awkward correction. You can also both leave and choose a clearly open meeting. Your chair does not depend on their paperwork.
What if they are sick in the chair?
Call 911 if they are confused, cannot breathe, are fainting, or might be in withdrawal. A meeting is not detox. NIAAA says alcohol withdrawal can be life-threatening when heavy drinking over time stops suddenly. NIDA says these groups are peer-led and not a substitute for treatment. Do not ask the chair to monitor them. Get emergency care. Your own meeting can happen after they are safe.
