Key takeaway
You are sleeping on the couch again because the bedroom is not safe or not peaceful. If you are in danger, call 911. If you are angry and exhausted and you are safe, stay on the couch and open an online Al-Anon meeting with the camera off. You can only listen.

The blanket is the one you used last time. The television is low, or it is off, and the bedroom is down the hall with the door doing whatever the door does when you are not in it. You are sleeping here again because the bed is not safe, or because it is not peaceful, and those are different nights. Your back already knows the difference between the cushions and a real night's sleep. You are angry, or you are scared, or the two have borrowed each other's clothes.
Name which night this is, as honestly as you can, before you decide the next move.
If the bedroom is dangerous
Call 911. Do that before you bargain with the hallway. There is a page on intimate partner violence and substance use for after the call, or while you are waiting if you can read and stay safe. A meeting cannot replace 911. Stay on the couch if that is where you are. You can spend the night there. You do not have to return to the bed to keep a story tidy.
Al-Anon will not tell you whether to stay in the relationship, and it will not tell you how to make someone stop drinking. Those questions are too big for a blanket and a glowing screen. Safety is the question that fits in a phone call to 911.
If you are angry, exhausted, and safe
Then you can still go to a meeting from the cushions. Al-Anon meetings online are a fair door when the house is the problem and the car is not an option. Electronic meetings can be searched by day, time, and language. Keep the camera off. Say "I'm just listening today" if they reach your name. How to find Al-Anon meetings is there for a building on another day. You can go without them. They do not have to admit anything before you are allowed to listen.
Families and friends can find help whether or not the alcoholic admits a problem. Your anger does not disqualify you. Your exhaustion does not either. If the night tips into wanting to hurt yourself, call or text 988.
The glass of water and the phone facedown can be the whole setup, and it is allowed to be yours. You can hear them moving in the other room and keep your body on these cushions. If sleep comes in pieces, let it. An hour of voices in your headphones is company that does not ask you to explain the hallway.
Tonight
If you are not safe, call 911 and stay with that. If you are safe and wrecked, stay on the couch, open one meeting, and keep the camera off. Listen. The bed can remain down the hall.
A meeting is peer support. If you need a treatment referral, call (800) 653-9376. The call is free to you. Treatment providers pay for the referral. Call or text 988 in a mental health crisis. Call 911 if you are in danger.

Common Questions
What if the bedroom is not safe?
Call 911 if you are in danger. Read the page on intimate partner violence and substance use, and let the emergency call come first. A meeting cannot replace 911. You can stay on the couch while you make that call if the couch is where you are. You do not have to walk back down the hall to prove anything. When you are safe enough to sit, an online meeting can wait its turn.
What if I am angry and exhausted, and I am not in danger?
Then the couch can hold you, and a meeting can too. Open an electronic Al-Anon meeting with the camera off. Search by day, time, and language. You can say you are just listening today. You can go without them. Anger and exhaustion are a real night. You still get a chair. Families can find help whether or not the person admits a drinking problem.
Should I go back to the bed to keep the peace?
Stay where you are if the couch is the peaceful spot, or the safer one. You can spend the night there. A meeting will not send you back down the hall, and it will not tell you whether to stay in the relationship. If the bedroom is dangerous, call 911. If it is only miserable, you can still choose the couch and listen to a meeting with the camera off.
Can I attend from the couch with the camera off?
Yes. Electronic meetings allow a dark square where your face would be. Headphones help if the house is nosy. You can mute yourself and listen. There is a guide to Al-Anon meetings online and one for finding meetings in a building later. Confirm the time. If a voice calls on you, one sentence is enough: you are just listening today. Then you can pull the blanket up.
Where do I look if this is bigger than a bad night?
If you are hurt or you are afraid of being hurt, call 911 and use the violence page. If you are safe and furious, use the electronic meeting list and keep the camera off. Al-Anon is for you, whether or not they admit the drinking. If you might hurt yourself, call or text 988. The couch is a place. It is also allowed to be the whole plan until morning.
