Key takeaway
They were gentle this morning and you flinched anyway. Kindness after chaos does not land as comfort when you are braced. Al-Anon is for people affected by someone else's drinking, whether or not that person is being sweet today. You can listen tonight. If the sweetness hides danger, call 911.

They made coffee. They used the soft voice. They asked about your day as if the other days had not happened. You smiled, and somewhere under the smile you flinched. Kindness, when it arrives after a wreck, can feel like the start of the next one.
You hate that you cannot take the good morning at face value. You also know why.
Al-Anon is for people whose lives have been affected by someone else's drinking. A sweet morning does not cancel that. The program is there whether or not they admit anything, and whether or not today looks fine from the outside.
You do not have to match their mood
Al-Anon says members come to find a way to live whether the alcoholic is still drinking or not. That includes the mornings when the person is charming and your shoulders will not drop. You are not required to perform relief.
You can listen without sharing. There are no dues or fees. Nobody takes attendance. What you hear is meant to stay there. You might hear someone describe a good mood they did not trust. You might hear something that does not fit. You can let it pass.
If you do not want them to see a meeting on your screen, use headphones or step outside. Electronic meetings are listed around the clock. The finder is for a room. Al-Anon lists 1-888-425-2666 for meeting information in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Confirm before you go.
Guilt is not the same as safety
Feeling bad for flinching is one thing. Being afraid of what the sweetness is covering is another. If you are unsafe, call 911. If the whiplash makes you want to hurt yourself, call or text 988.
When you want treatment information, SAMHSA's helpline is 1-800-662-HELP (4357), free and confidential, day and night, in English and Spanish. Call (800) 653-9376 for a referral. Calling is free. Treatment providers pay for the referral. FindTreatment.gov lists programs. A kind morning is not a treatment plan, and neither is your flinch.
Tonight
You can love them and still not relax on command. Open one meeting and listen. Let the good mood be whatever it is for one hour without you managing it. If you are in danger, call 911 first.

Common Questions
Am I allowed to go on a day they are being nice?
Yes. Al-Anon is for people affected by someone else's drinking, whether or not that person admits a problem or seeks help. A good morning does not erase the pattern your body remembers. You do not have to wait for a bad night to sit in a meeting.
Do I have to call them an alcoholic out loud?
No. You choose whether to speak. You can listen. You do not have to use any label at all. Meetings are confidential, and there is no sign-in sheet.
What if I feel guilty for not trusting the good mood?
That guilt is common, and a meeting is not a court. Members share experience. Al-Anon talks about finding a way to live whether the person is still drinking or not. You can bring the flinch without turning it into a verdict on their character.
Will they say I should relax and enjoy the good day?
A meeting is not a group of people assigned to talk you out of your nerves. You will hear what others have done with similar mornings. You can leave if a particular group is a bad fit. One meeting is information, not a marriage.
