They Missed What You Reminded Them

You reminded them, and they missed it anyway. You can stop replaying the reminder and sit in an Al-Anon meeting tonight.

Need help with this? Talk to someone now. Free and confidential. For you, or for someone you're worried about.

Key takeaway

You reminded them about the thing that mattered, and they missed it anyway. The replay is already running. Al-Anon is for people affected by someone else's drinking, and it will not help you write a better reminder. You can listen tonight. If someone was left unsafe, call 911.

You reminded them. You put it on the calendar, said it out loud, and sent the text they asked you not to nag them with. They missed it anyway. Someone waited. You are replaying your wording as if a clearer sentence would have competed with the drinking and won.

It did not win. You are allowed to stop auditioning a better version of the reminder.

Al-Anon is for people whose lives have been affected by someone else's drinking. Missed appointments, missed pickups, missed promises are part of why people finally look for a room of their own.

You cannot remind someone into a different disease

Al-Anon says alcoholism affects the whole family, and the only person who can stop the drinking is the one who is drinking. That does not make your reminder foolish. It means the reminder was never going to be the cure. Families often take the blame that belongs with the drinker. The replay in your head is that blame, looking for a typo.

You can go to a meeting and not present the evidence. Speaking is optional. There are no dues or fees. No sign-in. You can be angry and quiet.

Electronic meetings are there if you are still in the parking lot of whatever they missed. The finder is there if you want chairs. 1-888-425-2666 is Al-Anon's line for meeting information in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Confirm the time before you lean on it.

If the miss left someone in danger

A forgotten recital is a heartbreak. A forgotten child in an unsafe place is 911. Do not sort that difference inside a meeting while someone is still at risk. If you are safe and the shame makes you want to hurt yourself, call or text 988.

Call (800) 653-9376 for a treatment referral. Calling is free. Treatment providers pay for the referral. SAMHSA's helpline is 1-800-662-HELP (4357). FindTreatment.gov lists programs.

Tonight

Do not send a fourth reminder as a way to punish yourself. Join one meeting and listen. The thing they missed stays missed. You can be a person who is hurt and still put your body in a chair. If someone is unsafe, call 911 first.

Common Questions

Was the reminder not clear enough?

You can torture that question all night. Al-Anon says the only person who can stop the drinking is the person drinking, and families often take blame that belongs with the drinker. A meeting will not grade your wording.

Do I tell the meeting what they missed?

Only if you want to. You can listen. Names can stay out. There is no attendance, and meetings are confidential. The missed appointment does not have to become the share.

What if a child was the one waiting?

If a child is unsafe right now, call 911. After everyone is safe, you can still be furious and still go to a meeting. The meeting is for you. It is not a makeup session for what they skipped.

Can I go while I am still angry?

Yes. You do not have to cool off into a nicer version of yourself first. Members share experience. You can pass when it is your turn to speak.

How do I find a meeting before I send another reminder?

Electronic meetings, the meeting finder, or 1-888-425-2666 in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Confirm the listing. For a treatment referral, call (800) 653-9376. Calling is free. Treatment providers pay for the referral.
