It Landed Like an Order

A suggestion from a sponsor or an old-timer felt like an order. You can say no. Membership is a desire to stop drinking. If it is bullying, find another room.

Key takeaway

A suggestion from a sponsor or an old-timer landed like an order. You can say no. Membership is a desire to stop drinking, not obedience to the loudest person in the room. If the pressure is bullying, find another meeting and another person to call. You can still go listen tonight.

Somebody with more time than you told you what to do, and it did not feel like a suggestion. It felt like an order. Maybe it was your sponsor. Maybe it was a person who has been in the room long enough that people go quiet when they talk. Your shoulders went up. You nodded because nodding was faster than speaking.

You can say no. A suggestion is an offer from another person's experience. It is not a law, and it is not the price of the chair. Anyone with a desire to stop drinking is welcome. The only requirement for membership is that desire. The long form of that tradition says membership ought not depend on money or conformity. You do not have to match their plan to stay.

If it is bullying

There is a difference between a firm suggestion and someone crowding you. Mocking, threats, being followed to your car, being told you are nothing unless you obey: leave. Find another meeting. Find another person to call. You do not have to explain your exit to the person who made the room feel small. How to look for a sponsor can wait until you are not shaking. The next right thing is a different door.

You can just listen in the new room. There are no dues or fees. Meetings are in person, online, or by phone, so you are not stuck with the one building. Check the Meeting Guide app or Find A.A. near you, and confirm the listing. Groups decide their own format. One loud person is not the whole fellowship.

If you are afraid for your safety, call 911. If the shame turns into wanting to hurt yourself, call or text 988. A meeting is peer support, not treatment. Nobody in the chairs gets to practice being your doctor or your boss.

If you want a treatment referral, call (800) 653-9376. The call is free to you. Treatment providers pay for the referral.

Common Questions

Am I allowed to say no to a sponsor?

Yes. A suggestion is something you can try, leave, or refuse. You can say 'I am not doing that.' You do not have to argue the whole philosophy. If they are hurt, that is information. It is not a rule that you fold. The desire to stop drinking is what makes you welcome.

What if everyone else nodded along?

The room can agree and you can still decline. Groups decide their own format. A person's strong opinion is still one person's experience. You can sit through the rest of the hour without signing up for their plan. You can also leave quietly and find a different meeting.

How do I know it is bullying?

If they mock you, threaten you, follow you, or tell you that you will drink and die unless you obey, that is not a suggestion. Find another meeting and another person to call. You do not have to announce why you are leaving. If you are scared for your safety, call 911.

Do I lose my seat if I do not have a sponsor?

No. A sponsor is not the requirement for membership. You can listen with nobody's number in your phone. When you want to ask someone else, there is a plain way to look. You can take your time. The chair is still yours while you look.

What if I need help beyond the argument?

Call or text 988 if the fight in your head turns into hopelessness. Call 911 if you are scared for your safety. A bossy share does not get to be the only voice you hear tonight. You can find another meeting and listen. You can say no and still belong.
