Key takeaway
Someone asked you to come to a family group, and you do not know if it is a class or a therapy hour. Education teaches what addiction and recovery look like. Therapy works on the relationships. The person in care decides who attends. If the hour would be unsafe, do not go.

They asked you to come Thursday. You do not know if you are walking into a class about addiction or into an hour about your marriage.
If you are being hurt, call 911. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988. Do not treat a family lecture as a safety plan.
Ask what the hour actually is
Call the program and ask whether Thursday is education, family therapy, a visit, or a meeting for relatives. SAMHSA's family-therapy advisory puts a teaching hour next to counseling, and they are not the same hour. Education explains addiction, recovery, and what a return to use can look like. Counseling works on roles, relationships, and how you talk. Families often show up isolated and ashamed. Teaching is one response to that. It is not therapy with the chairs moved.
A program can teach the lesson and still not offer couples counseling. It can offer counseling and still hand you a pamphlet. Ask who leads it. A clinician teaching about addiction is the clinical service. A relatives' meeting with no clinician is something else. NIDA says groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous are not treatment, because health care professionals do not lead them. Both can help. Only one of them is the education hour on an intensive outpatient schedule. If you need to see where those hours sit in a week, read weekend IOP.
Several families in one room can be useful, because people who have lived this can sit with each other. You do not have to tell strangers a dose. Ask what is shared.
Who can walk in
The person in care decides who family is. That can be a grandparent, a partner, a friend, or someone they live with who is not a relative. Staff can suggest a name. They are supposed to honor a no. An education group should not be a back door for a relative the person refused. If you only need to see them, ask about a visit instead of the class. Family visits during rehab lists what to ask the desk about contact.
If the class will discuss that person's plan, ask what the release covers before you expect an update. A general lesson that never says their name is a different event. If the desk goes quiet, read what privacy rules allow a program to say.
When you should not clear the evening
Look at safety before you go. Joint counseling is generally a poor fit after intimate partner violence, and a poor fit while someone is in acute withdrawal and still unsteady. Calling it education does not erase that. If the danger is happening now, do not go.
If you live far away, ask whether the hour has a video seat. Do not assume the lobby does. If the group spends the time on how the family caused the substance use, you can ask what the goal is. Learning what the next month of care involves is a different hour from being told what you did wrong. If what you need is support for yourself, read family support during rehab.
FindTreatment.gov will not tell you whether Thursday is family education. Call or text (800) 653-9376 if you are trying to tell a class from a therapy hour before you travel.

Common Questions
Is a family education group the same as family therapy?
No. Education explains addiction, recovery, and what a return to use can look like. Family counseling works on roles, relationships, and communication. A program can offer the lesson and still not offer couples counseling. Ask which one is actually on this calendar.
Is it the same as visiting day?
No. A visit is contact an overnight program allows. An education group is a scheduled lesson. You can be invited to the class and still be unable to tour a bedroom. Ask which event they put on the schedule before you clear the evening.
Who is allowed to attend?
The person in treatment decides who counts as family. That can include grandparents, a partner, a friend, or a family of choice. Staff may suggest a name. They are supposed to honor the decision. A class that discusses that person's care still needs the right consent.
What if there is violence at home?
Do not use a family hour as a safety plan. Joint counseling is generally not recommended after intimate partner violence. Do not bring a child or a partner into a session if there is current abuse or a risk of it. Acute withdrawal is a poor time for that hour. If you are being hurt, call 911.
Does every program offer one?
No. Intensive outpatient schedules are described as including family education among the core services. A description is not proof this building holds the class, or that a clinician leads it. Ask who teaches, and what you will be told about the person in care.
