Key takeaway
You want to see someone in treatment, and nobody has told you what day you can walk in. There is no national visiting schedule. Ask that program, and write the answer down. The person in care decides who counts as family. If the visit would put someone in danger, do not go.

You want to see them. You have the day off, or you are already in the car, and nobody has said whether the door opens for you.
If you are being hurt or threatened, call 911. Do not keep a visiting appointment that puts you back in reach of someone who has hurt you. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988.
Ask this program, then write it down
There is no national visiting schedule. SAMHSA's starting-treatment page tells people entering an overnight program to ask what contact with family and friends is allowed. Hours, phones, and who may come belong to that building. A blog that prints "Sundays from 1 to 3" is describing some other place. Ask, and write down who told you.
Ask whether a phone call is different from walking in. Ask whether a child may be in the visiting room. That question is separate from whether a child belongs in a counseling session. What goes in the bag is in this guide on packing for rehab. Food a visitor brings is the same kind of question as food in the bag. Ask this program. Do not copy another facility's list.
If the desk will not say they are there
The person in treatment decides who counts as family. Friends count if that person says they count. A legal relationship is not automatic permission.
If the program is publicly identified as providing only substance use diagnosis, treatment, or referral, staff may confirm a specific person is there only with written consent or a court order. Silence at the desk is often that rule. It is not proof of a disaster. Privacy and consent walks through what a release covers. A release for a therapy hour and permission for a Sunday visit can be two different pieces of paper. Ask which one you have.
A visit is not the hour you settle it
A hug in a visiting room is not family therapy. A fight in that room is not family therapy either. Clinical work on roles and communication is in this guide on family therapy in rehab, and the person in care still decides whether you attend. SAMHSA's family-therapy advisory says joint counseling is generally a poor fit after intimate partner violence, and a poor fit during acute withdrawal, when the person is physically and emotionally unsteady. Do not put a child or a partner in a session if there is current abuse or a risk of it.
If you cannot travel, ask whether a video call counts as contact. A residential program may not offer that for ordinary visits. Help for you, separate from their treatment, is in family support during rehab.
Search FindTreatment.gov for a program, then call and ask about contact. Call or text (800) 653-9376 if you need help asking what kind of contact it actually allows.

Common Questions
Are there standard visiting hours?
No. SAMHSA tells people entering an overnight program to ask what contact with family and friends is allowed. Hours, phones, and who may come are that building's rules. A schedule you saw for a different facility can be wrong here. Get the answer from this program, in writing when you can.
Why will staff not say my relative is there?
If a facility is publicly identified as providing only substance use diagnosis, treatment, or referral, it may acknowledge a specific person is there only with that person's written consent or a court order. Ask which rule applies. A front-desk refusal is often the privacy rule. It is not proof they are or are not admitted.
Is a visit the same as family therapy?
No. A visit is contact the program allows. Family therapy is clinical work on roles, relationships, and communication. The person in care decides who is included. A hug in a visiting room is not a session. A confrontation in that room is not a session either.
When should I stay away?
If you are being hurt or threatened, call 911. Joint counseling is generally not recommended after intimate partner violence. Do not put a child or a partner in a session if there is current abuse or a risk of it. Acute withdrawal is a poor time for a family counseling hour, because the person is physically and emotionally unsteady.
What if we live too far away?
Distance, work, and a relative who will not come are obstacles programs are told to expect. For counseling, secure video is one option when someone cannot travel. A residential lobby may not have that for an ordinary visit. Ask what this program actually offers before you book a flight.
