Key takeaway
Someone you sponsor texted that they drank, and your chest dropped. You can answer without having a perfect speech. If they are sick or in danger, tell them to call 911, and call it yourself if they cannot. A meeting is not detox. You can still go to a meeting of your own tonight.

The text is three words and your stomach is gone. They drank. You are staring at the screen like the right reply exists and you are too slow to deserve it. Part of you wants to fix the night for them. Part of you wants to throw the phone, because you are not as steady as the job suddenly requires.
You can be a person and not a rescue service.
P-15, Questions and Answers on Sponsorship, is shared A.A. experience. It is Conference-approved literature. It is not a switchboard, and it will not type the text. A meeting is still a place either of you can listen. The desire to stop drinking is the membership line, including after a drink.
Safety first, then a human sentence
If they are confused, seizing, or cannot breathe, tell them to call 911. Call it yourself if they cannot. NIAAA says withdrawal can be life-threatening after heavy drinking stops suddenly. NIDA says these groups are peer-led, not treatment. Do not coach a medical crisis from a thread.
If they are miserable and safe, you can answer: you heard them, you are not throwing them away, a meeting is there when they can sit. You do not have to solve the relapse in one bubble. You also do not have to be available all night if your own feet are sliding. Tell someone who sponsors you, or go to your own meeting and keep their details out of the share. Anonymity still applies.
SAMHSA's helpline, 1-800-662-HELP (4357), can talk about treatment. FindTreatment.gov lists programs. Call (800) 653-9376 if a referral is what they are actually asking for. Calling is free. Treatment providers pay for the referral.
Tonight
Send the honest text. Get them to 911 if their body is in trouble. Then put yourself in a meeting, even a phone one, so their drink does not become yours. If you might hurt yourself, call or text 988.

Common Questions
What am I supposed to text back?
A human sentence. You can say you are glad they told you, and ask if they are safe. You can tell them to get to a meeting when they can stand up. P-15, the sponsorship pamphlet, is shared experience. It is not a script that sends the reply for you, and it is not a night desk.
What if they might be in withdrawal?
If they are confused, shaking hard, or cannot breathe, they need 911, not a paragraph. NIAAA says alcohol withdrawal can be life-threatening when heavy drinking stops suddenly. NIDA says mutual-help groups are not treatment. Do not try to manage a medical emergency by text.
Did I fail them because they drank?
Their drink is theirs. Sponsorship is one person sharing experience with another. It is not custody. You can feel gutted and still not be the cause. You can talk about your own spiral at a meeting without making their story the share.
What if I want to drink because they did?
Tell someone else, a person who sponsors you or another meeting. Do not make the sponsee your support while you are shaky. Phone meetings exist. There are no dues or fees. The desire to stop drinking is still your own requirement to meet.
What if this is too much for me?
Say so. You can be honest that you are not able to be their only call. SAMHSA's helpline is 1-800-662-HELP (4357). Call (800) 653-9376 if they want a treatment referral and ask you to help them find one. Calling is free. Treatment providers pay for the referral. If you might hurt yourself, call or text 988.
