Key takeaway
The group text pings all day, and you want out of it. You can mute or leave the thread and still belong at the meeting. A desire to stop drinking does not require a constant chat. Anonymity is fragile in a thread. If the texts are cruel or threatening, you can leave them and tell someone safe.

The thread has a life of its own. Jokes, plans, a crisis at noon, a photo of a plate of eggs. You were grateful at first. Now your pocket buzzes through work, and you feel guilty when you do not answer, and exposed when you do. You want out, and you are afraid out means you are leaving the people who know you are trying.
You can leave a chat and keep a meeting.
A desire to stop drinking is the membership. A notification is not. You can show up and listen without having been online. There are no dues or fees. Anonymity frays when a story lives in a thread that can be forwarded. You are allowed to want your name out of that.
Mute it, and say so once if you need to
Mute the alerts tonight. If you can stand one message, tell them you are stepping back from the chat and you will be at the meeting. Then stop explaining. If the thread is cruel, you do not owe the announcement. Leave. If someone threatens you, call 911.
Get your support from a voice. Meeting Guide lists the actual meeting. aa.org does not. The meetings search is unverified. Confirm the time. A phone meeting is there if you want people without a scrolling screen. Do not replace the chat with a drink and call that quieter.
Tonight
Silence the thread. Go to the meeting, or to a phone meeting, and listen. You are not required to be reachable every hour to want to stop. If you might hurt yourself, call or text 988. A treatment referral is (800) 653-9376. Calling is free. Treatment providers pay for the referral.

Common Questions
Will they think I relapsed if I leave the chat?
They might guess, and they might not. You can say, once, that you are muting the thread and you will see them at the meeting. You do not owe a speech. The desire to stop drinking is not measured in reply speed.
Is a group text anonymous?
Barely. Screenshots happen. Phones get borrowed. Be careful what you type, and do not type other people's stories. If the thread already feels unsafe, leave it. A meeting in a room is a different container. There are no dues or fees for that room.
Can I stay in the group and leave the chat?
Yes. The meeting is the meeting. The thread is extra. Some people love it. You do not have to. Identifying yourself in a chat all day is not mandatory.
What if the texts are the only support I have?
Then mute them for a day and go to an actual meeting so support is a voice, not a bubble. Meeting Guide and the meetings search can help. Confirm the listing. aa.org is not a finder. Phone meetings exist.
What if the thread turned mean?
Leave it. If someone is threatening you, call 911. If the pile-on makes you want to hurt yourself, call or text 988. For a treatment referral, call (800) 653-9376. Calling is free. Treatment providers pay for the referral.
