Key takeaway
You had the volume up, or the wall is thin, and you think they heard you say the true thing. Your stomach dropped. You do not have to unsay it in a fight tonight. You can go to another meeting. If you are unsafe because they heard, call 911. Your safety comes before a perfect explanation.

The share was finally honest, and then you heard the floorboard. Or the laptop volume was higher than you thought. Now you are sure they were on the other side of the door for the true part. Your mind is writing their reaction in advance, and all of the versions are bad.
You do not have to walk into the hall and unsay it tonight.
You can refuse the transcript
If they ask, you can say, "I was in a meeting for me." You can stop there. You do not have to play it back. You do not have to name anyone else who spoke. Other people's stories stay in the meeting.
Al-Anon is for families and friends affected by someone else's drinking. You can keep getting help whether or not they seek help, and whether or not they liked what they overheard. One ruined evening does not kick you out.
If the hallway is scary, call 911. Do not argue your way to safety. The guide for when you know you are not safe is the priority. If they are shaking, confused, or cannot breathe, call 911 for that too. NIAAA says withdrawal can be life-threatening when heavy drinking over time stops suddenly.
If you want to disappear because you feel exposed, call or text 988.
Next time, a more private chair
You can come back. Pick a time when the house is empty, or go in person, or sit in a car with headphones. Electronic meetings let you listen with the camera off. Headphones are a practical mercy. The online guide talks about being new in that kind of room. The search on this site can help you look, and the listings are not verified, so confirm them.
FindTreatment.gov lists programs if they, or you, need treatment. Call (800) 653-9376 for help finding it. The call is free to you. Treatment providers pay for the referral. The line is not Al-Anon and it is not SMART Recovery.
Do not chase them down the hall
Let the meeting stay a meeting. If you are unsafe, call 911. If you are safe, you can go again, somewhere quieter, and listen. Being overheard is painful. It does not mean you have to quit telling the truth in a room that can hold it.

Common Questions
Do I have to explain what they overheard?
You can say you were in a meeting for yourself and stop there. You do not owe a transcript. Al-Anon is for families and friends affected by someone else's drinking, whether or not they seek help. You can refuse to name other people you heard.
Can I go back if this meeting blew up at home?
Yes. One hard night does not close the fellowship. Try a different time, or an electronic meeting from somewhere private, with the camera off. If home is not safe for any meeting audio, leave or call 911 first.
What if I said another member's name out loud?
Stop using it. Do not repeat it to the person who overheard, and do not post it. You can tell your own story more carefully next time. You can still return. If the fear is making you want to hurt yourself, call or text 988.
They are drunk and furious in the hallway. What do I do?
Call 911 if you are afraid. A meeting is not protection. If they are medically in trouble, shaking, confused, or unable to breathe, call 911 for that too. NIAAA says withdrawal after heavy drinking over time can be life-threatening.
