Key takeaway
You finally said the hard thing and someone told you what to do. Leave him. Stay. Hide the keys. Call his boss. Your mouth shut again. You can say you are done. Al-Anon members share their own experience instead of directing your life. You can listen with the camera off at another meeting. If you are in danger, call 911.

You had just gotten the sentence out. The house, the lying, the way you check the door. And someone answered with a plan: leave, stay, take the keys, call the job, stop being so soft. It felt like the room turned into the kitchen you were trying to get a break from. Your throat closed.
You can stop. Their plan is not an assignment.
Experience is the share, not a set of orders
Al-Anon's own newcomer pages describe a meeting where members share what happened in their lives. The first-meeting guide on this site puts the practice in plain words: people do not take your share as a chance to run your marriage. The newcomer FAQ sits beside that. One member who forgets can still talk like a boss. You do not have to obey them to be polite.
You can say, "Thank you, I'm just listening now." You can pass. You can leave at the break and try a different group. Nar-Anon has its own no cross-talk page if the problem in the house is drugs. Tonight, if the pain is someone's drinking, stay with Al-Anon and change rooms if this one talked over you.
Families and friends can get help whether or not the drinker seeks help. That includes help after a clumsy meeting.
If someone told you to confront a violent person, do not do it because a stranger sounded sure. Call 911 if you are in danger. If the drinker is shaking, confused, or cannot breathe, call 911. NIAAA says withdrawal can be life-threatening when heavy drinking over time stops suddenly. A comment from a chair is not a doctor.
If you want to hurt yourself because you feel foolish for having spoken, call or text 988.
Another meeting, quieter
Electronic meetings let you listen with the camera off. The finder and the search on this site will show you options. Confirm the listing. These listings are not verified.
FindTreatment.gov lists programs if clinical care is what your family needs. Call (800) 653-9376 for help finding treatment. The call is free to you. Treatment providers pay for the referral. The line is not Al-Anon and it is not SMART Recovery.
You can be done talking
Say you are listening, or walk out at the break. Try a different meeting tonight. You were brave to speak. You do not have to take instructions from the first person who answered.

Common Questions
Are they allowed to give me advice?
Al-Anon's newcomer material is built on members sharing their own experience, strength, and hope. The first-meeting practice is no cross-talk and no unsolicited advice about whether you should stay, leave, or manage the drinker. One person forgetting that does not make their instruction yours to obey.
What can I say in the moment?
You can say, 'Thank you, I'm just listening now,' or 'I pass.' You can stop. You do not have to debate them. If the room keeps it up, you can leave and try a different meeting. Electronic meetings let you keep the camera off.
What if the advice was to do something dangerous?
Do not follow a stranger into a confrontation. If you are in danger, call 911. If the drinker is medically in trouble, call 911. NIAAA says withdrawal can be life-threatening when heavy drinking over time stops suddenly. A meeting comment is not a medical order.
Does one bad meeting mean Al-Anon is wrong for me?
One person talking out of turn is a small sample. Families and friends can find help whether or not the alcoholic seeks help. Try another meeting. If you want to hurt yourself, call or text 988.
