Key takeaway
The show ended and a drink ticket is in your palm. It feels already spent. You can drop it in a bin before the bar. A desire to stop drinking survives a free offer. If the crowd is too much, leave and find a meeting after. You have not decided just because the paper is in your hand.

The lights came up. Someone pressed a paper ticket into your palm and said the drink is included. Your feet are already angled toward the bar, because that is the hallway you know. The ticket feels like a decision you made when you bought the seat.
You have not made it yet. The paper can go in a trash can between here and the rail.
Drop it before you negotiate
Do it while you are still in the aisle. A ticket in a pocket will argue with you in the car. A ticket in the bin is just trash. If a friend asks, "I'm stepping out" is a full answer.
You can want to stop and still feel robbed of the free thing. That feeling is allowed. Tradition Three still only asks for a desire to stop drinking. A comp does not amend it.
If you already traded the ticket and the drink is in your other hand, do not order a second to finish the thought. If you are sick, shaking, confused, or you cannot breathe, call 911. NIAAA says withdrawal can be life-threatening when heavy drinking over time stops suddenly. The venue cannot manage that, and neither can a meeting.
The crowd can be the trigger
Noise, sweat, and a hallway that smells like a bar are enough to make a sober person hunt an exit. Leave. Night air counts. If you are spinning into panic or you want to hurt yourself, call or text 988. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
When you can, find people who will not hand you another ticket. Meetings run in rooms, online, and by phone. You can listen. You need not join a prayer. There are no dues or fees.
aa.org will not show you a schedule. It sends you to local A.A. The search on this site is a place to look, and the listings are not verified, so check the time. Late at night, a phone meeting or an online meeting may be the one you can actually reach.
NIDA says this kind of group is peer support, not treatment run by clinicians. FindTreatment.gov lists programs if that is the help you need. Call (800) 653-9376 to ask about treatment. You do not pay for that call. Treatment providers pay for the referral. The line is not an A.A. office and it is not SMART Recovery.
At the exit
Throw the ticket away, or leave it on a table and walk past the bar. Then go home a different way, or sit in a meeting and listen. The paper was an offer. You can decline it with your feet.

Common Questions
Is a free drink different because I did not buy it?
Your body will not sort the receipt. A desire to stop drinking is the membership line, and a complimentary ticket does not edit it. You can throw the paper away. You can also hand it to someone else and walk outside.
What if my friends are already in line?
You can tell them you are stepping out. You can skip the explanation. If you want company that understands the ticket, go to a meeting after. You can listen. Introducing yourself is not mandatory, and there are no dues or fees.
What if I already redeemed it?
Stop at the one you already have in your hand, and do not order the next. If you feel sick, shaky, confused, or you cannot breathe, call 911. A sudden stop after heavy drinking over time can be medically dangerous. A meeting cannot treat that.
How do I find a meeting this late?
Meetings are in person, online, or by phone, including late ones. aa.org is not a finder. Use local A.A. resources or the meetings search on this site, and confirm the listing. A dial-in meeting is enough if the building is the problem.
