Key takeaway
Step Eleven uses prayer and meditation to stay in contact with God as you understood God, and asks only for knowledge of that will and the power to carry it out. A few quiet minutes count. If the night is a crisis or withdrawal, call 988 or 911 before you try to meditate.

The house is quiet and your head is not. You are replaying the day, or the years, and a drink would knock it down. Step Eleven is what the program offers for that kind of night: you sought, through prayer and meditation, to improve your conscious contact with God as you understood God, praying only for knowledge of that will and the power to carry it out. You do not have to become a mystic before sunrise.
If you are in crisis, call or text 988 before you try to breathe your way through danger. If this is a seizure, trouble breathing, or collapse, call 911. Heavy drinking stopped suddenly can be life-threatening. Meditation is not medical care.
Contact, not a performance
The wording is sought and improve. It assumes a practice you return to, not a single perfect night. Conscious contact is a plain idea: you are not running the show half-asleep and calling it thought. As you understood God leaves room if your language is clumsy. You can be in A.A. without matching anyone's religion.
Praying only for knowledge of the will, and the power to carry it out, is a limit. It is not a shopping list. On a sleepless night the will you can actually know is usually the next right action. Do not drink. Do not pick the fight. Tell the truth in the morning. Go to a meeting if one is still open, or find a phone meeting if the building is closed. Members decide their own hours, including online and by phone.
If quiet makes it worse
Some people sit down to meditate and the panic gets louder. That does not mean you failed the step. Get up. Put your feet on the floor. Drink water if you can keep it down. Write three lines: what I am afraid of, what is mine to do, what can wait until daylight. Then stop writing.
Many meetings already use a moment of silence. You can borrow that shape at the kitchen table for two minutes. You can also go to a meeting and use their silence instead of building a private ritual while you are raw. You do not have to say the prayer out loud.
NIDA still applies. A quiet peer practice is not treatment for insomnia, panic, or withdrawal. If the night keeps breaking, ask for clinical help in the morning, or now if you are unsafe. SAMHSA's helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357) answers all night. So does (800) 653-9376, if what you need is help finding a level of care. That site number is a referral line, not a prayer line and not SMART Recovery.
If your body is too loud for quiet
Sweating, a racing heart, or a stomach that will not settle can be withdrawal, anxiety, or both. Do not decide which one by yourself if you have been drinking heavily. The quiet practice can wait. Call for medical help, or have someone stay with you while you do. People sometimes try to pray their way through symptoms that need a clinician, and that delay is how a bad night becomes an emergency. FindTreatment.gov can wait until daylight if you are stable. It should not wait if you are getting worse.
When you are steady enough to lie down, keep the room simple. Phone across the room if scrolling is how you talk yourself into a drink. A glass of water. One meeting if you still cannot close your eyes, even if you only listen with the screen dark. Sleep may come late. The win is that you did not drink over the waiting.
A small Step Eleven
Sit for a few minutes. Ask, in whatever words you have, what you should do next and for the strength to do that and not the dramatic thing. Then do the next thing, even if it is only going back to bed without a drink.
If you cannot be alone with your head, search meetings for something still running, or look in the Meeting Guide app, and confirm it before you join. Listening to other people stay sober counts as not white-knuckling the dark by yourself.
You are allowed to be awake and afraid and still not drink. Step Eleven is a way to aim the fear at the next right action. If the fear is an emergency, call. The step will be there when you are safe.

Common Questions
What if I do not pray?
The step names prayer and meditation, and it says God as we understood Him. Your understanding can be unfinished, and you are still welcome at a meeting regardless of religion. Sitting still and asking what the next right action is can be the whole practice tonight. You do not have to copy someone else's words. If a meeting ends with a prayer, you can be silent.
How long am I supposed to meditate?
The step does not set a number of minutes. Do not invent a quota for yourself at 2 a.m. A few quiet minutes are a real start. If your mind runs to the drink, that is not a failed meditation. Get up and do something plain: water, a meeting listing, a call to someone who is awake in recovery. The point is contact and the next action, not a blank mind.
Is this a treatment for insomnia or anxiety?
No. A meeting and a quiet minute are not medical care. NIDA describes mutual-help groups as peer support, not clinically led treatment. If you are in a mental health crisis, call or text 988. If you are in alcohol withdrawal danger, call 911. Do not use Step Eleven to avoid a doctor when your body or your mind is in trouble.
What does knowledge of His will mean if I am new?
In practice, people often mean the next honest action, not a hidden map of the whole year. The step says knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. Tonight that can be: do not drink, do not send the angry message, go to a meeting or go to bed. You can ask for the power to do the small thing. You do not have to see the rest.
Can I do Step Eleven in a meeting?
Many meetings include a moment of silence or a prayer. That is a group choice, not a national schedule. You can use the silence and skip the words. Step study meetings sometimes reach Step Eleven in rotation. You can also do the quiet part at home. Either way, listening at a meeting still counts as being with people who are trying to stay sober.
