Addiction Help for Military Families

If a service member or a supporter is in crisis, call 988 and press 1. You need not be enrolled in VA care. Get TRICARE residential approval before you travel.

Need help with this? Talk to someone now. Free and confidential. For you, or for someone you're worried about.

Key takeaway

You may be holding a TRICARE card, a VA question, and a crisis at the same time. The Veterans Crisis Line serves service members, Guard and Reserve members, Veterans, and the people who support them, even if nobody is enrolled in VA health care. Call 988 and press 1. For a residential TRICARE stay, get pre-authorization before you travel.

You are trying to help someone who served, or someone on active duty, and you do not know which door is yours. A crisis line, a TRICARE card, and VA care are three different systems. Calling the wrong one is how families travel to a program that will not be paid.

If this is a medical emergency, call 911. If a service member, a Veteran, a member of the National Guard or Reserve, or someone who supports them is in crisis, call 988 and press 1, or text 838255.

Press 1 tonight if the crisis is now

The Veterans Crisis Line serves Veterans, service members, National Guard and Reserve members, and the people who support them. You do not have to be enrolled in VA benefits or VA health care. The call is free and confidential. You decide how much to share. For a crisis that is not in that lane, use the same number without pressing 1.

VA substance use care is a different door, on veterans treatment options. If the person who served uses VA, the family may still be on another card.

If the card says TRICARE, ask before you travel

TRICARE may cover substance use treatment when it is medically necessary, including inpatient care, intensive outpatient care, withdrawal management, and medication treatment. It does not cover aversion therapy or unproven treatments. Cost shares depend on the plan. Ask the regional contractor what you would owe.

Residential care needs pre-authorization. Get that approval before you travel, unless you are already in an emergency. A facility that offers to bill TRICARE has not granted the authorization. Families who are not eligible for TRICARE sometimes have CHAMPVA, a different family benefit.

A sudden stop after chronic heavy drinking can be life-threatening. Stopping a benzodiazepine too quickly can cause seizures. Tell the clinician about both before anyone tries to quit on leave. Compare detox at home with medical care before that attempt. What a clinic must tell command is a question for that clinic. Privacy rules cover many civilian programs.

Search FindTreatment.gov if you are looking at a community program. Call or text (800) 653-9376 if you want help sorting civilian options while you check the card you actually hold.

Common Questions

Who can call 988 and press 1?

The Veterans Crisis Line serves Veterans, service members, National Guard and Reserve members, and the people who support them. You do not have to be enrolled in VA benefits or VA health care. The call is free and confidential, and you decide how much to share. You can also text 838255. For a number outside the continental United States, use the crisis line's own page. For a medical emergency, call 911.

Is this the same as VA substance use care?

No. VA eligibility and the services VA describes are on the veterans guide. A spouse, a child, or an active-duty family member may be in a different system. If the card you have is TRICARE, start with TRICARE. If the person who served uses VA, do not assume the family uses the same door.

What does TRICARE say it may cover?

TRICARE may cover inpatient substance use services, intensive outpatient programs, withdrawal management, medication assisted treatment, mental health therapeutic services, office-based opioid treatment, opioid treatment programs, and partial hospitalization. It does not cover aversion therapy or unproven treatments. Covered services have to be medically necessary and proven. Cost shares depend on the plan. Ask the regional contractor.

Does residential care need approval first?

Yes. TRICARE's residential page says you need pre-authorization. Approval is described when there is a primary substance use diagnosis and symptoms are severe enough to need inpatient care, or still need full-time monitoring, or are causing trouble functioning in several major life areas. A program's offer to bill TRICARE is not that approval. Get it before you travel, unless you are already in an emergency.

Will command or a spouse automatically see the record?

Civilian programs that are federally assisted can fall under the privacy rules summarized in the privacy guide. Military health records and command notification are separate systems. Ask the clinic that is actually treating the person what it must report.
