Key takeaway
You want other men in the program because there are topics you will not bring up with women in the room. A listing that says men may be the whole program or one group in a mixed building. Tonight, call and ask whether women are admitted to the unit. If withdrawal is tonight, do not wait on that bed.

You want a men's program because there are things you will not say in a mixed group. Topics you avoid when women are in the room. You want time with other men when you do not have to perform.
A listing that says men may be that room, or it may be one group inside a building that also houses women. Before you travel, ask whether women are admitted to the program, the unit, or only kept out of one group.
If someone will not wake, or you are in immediate danger, call 911. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988. Stopping heavy drinking all at once can be life-threatening. Do not wait on a men-only bed if that is tonight.
Get the room you mean
Facilities report their own services, and those services change, so the brochure and the admission rule can disagree. A note that the program serves adult men is a different line from who the building accepts. Call and ask who walks into the part you would enter.
Ask whether the week is outpatient or residential, and whether anyone can watch withdrawal, before the roommate list decides the week. Weigh that in choosing between programs. If asking feels like failure, start with men in rehab before you sort the roommate list.
A room of men is not yet a men's group
The chapter on settings treats the research on men-only settings for male clients as thin, even though many such programs exist, particularly where the criminal justice system sends people.
Some clinicians believe a gender-specific group can be useful. A group that happens to be men is not the same as a group built around male gender issues. Ask which one you would be in, and ask how they handle competition and people talking over each other. Who should not be placed in a group at all is part of group therapy.
Many of those programs are inside jails and prisons. If a judge is in this, ask the program and your lawyer what the order actually requires. A men's A.A. meeting can sit beside a program. It is not an admission policy.
Search FindTreatment.gov and confirm the admission rule by phone. Call or text (800) 653-9376 if you want help asking whether a program is men-only or a men's track inside a mixed building.

Common Questions
What does men-only mean?
Women are not admitted to that program, that unit, or that group. A mixed building can still run a men's group on one afternoon. A group that happens to be all men is not the same as a group built around male gender issues. Ask which one you are being offered.
Do men-only programs work better?
The panel behind the men's treatment protocol could not find research weighing single-gender settings for male clients, even though many such programs exist, especially in criminal justice settings. In one study it cites, Bride (2001), men in an all-male program did not have significantly different outcomes from men in a mixed-gender program. That study sits in a protocol first printed in 2013.
Does a directory code for adult men mean women are excluded?
No. In the 2023 national directory, MN means the facility reported a special program or group for adult men. Gender accepted is a different line, with separate codes for female and male. The exclusive-service codes do not include a flag for men only. Services change. Verify them when you call.
What goes wrong in an all-male group?
Clinical writing cited in the protocol warns that intellectualizing, avoiding intimacy, and dominance can be problems, and that a male-only group can become competitive, cynical, or disruptive. Mixed groups have their own use: men can practice nonsexual relationships with women. One study associated mixed groups with greater variation in interpersonal styles for male participants, not for female participants. Ask how the group handles that.
Should I wait for a men-only bed if I am in withdrawal?
No. Stopping all at once after long, heavy drinking can be life-threatening. Stopping a benzodiazepine abruptly, or cutting the dose too fast, can cause seizures that can be life-threatening. The monitored bed tonight may be on a mixed unit. Ask where that bed is.
