Disulfiram (once branded Antabuse) is an FDA-approved alcohol use disorder medicine that works by making drinking unpleasant. Side effects can appear with or without alcohol, and the alcohol reaction can be severe.

Call 911 for emergencies. Call or text 988 for a crisis.

Effects without drinking

People commonly ask about sleepiness, headache, metallic or garlic-like taste, skin rash, and changes in sexual function. Report new jaundice, dark urine, severe abdominal pain, or unusual bleeding - those can signal liver injury that needs urgent evaluation.

The alcohol reaction

If alcohol is consumed, acetaldehyde can build up and cause flushing, nausea, vomiting, sweating, chest discomfort, or breathing trouble. Mouthwash, sauces, and some "alcohol-free" products can still contain enough alcohol to matter. Read labels and ask your pharmacist.

Not a detox drug

Disulfiram does not treat alcohol withdrawal. Sibling guides: disulfiram (Antabuse), naltrexone / Vivitrol.

Broker filter

A center that refuses to discuss FDA-approved alcohol medications while pushing a distant residential bed is not offering a complete options set.

Common Questions

What are common disulfiram side effects?

Drowsiness, fatigue, headache, metallic or garlic-like taste, skin reactions, and sexual side effects are among effects people ask about. Your clinician should review the labeling that applies to your prescription.

What happens if I drink on disulfiram?

Alcohol can trigger flushing, throbbing headache, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, or trouble breathing. That reaction can begin within minutes. Call 911 for severe reactions.

Is Antabuse the same medicine?

Antabuse was the brand name. Generics may still be available. See also disulfiram (Antabuse) for alcohol.

Does disulfiram treat withdrawal?

No. It does not make alcohol withdrawal safer. Dangerous withdrawal needs medical detox first.

Who needs extra caution?

Liver disease, heart disease, pregnancy plans, and many drug interactions require clinician review. Never hide this medicine in someone's food or drink.
