College Students and Recovery

Campus counseling and a treatment program are different doors. A school may tell some parents about an alcohol violation. Ask what yours does.

Key takeaway

You need care, and you are afraid the college will call home or that a campus counselor is detox. A college may tell parents of a student under 21 about an alcohol or drug violation. It does not have to. Tonight, ask what your school offers, and get medical care if withdrawal is the problem.

You need care, and you are afraid the school will call your parents, or that the counseling office on campus is the same thing as detox. Those are different doors.

If a seizure, collapse, or trouble breathing is happening, call 911. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988.

Ask what the campus actually offers

Colleges typically mix help aimed at students with changes to how available alcohol is on and around campus. Individual efforts can include counseling, skills programs, and feedback, including for first-year students, athletes, and students required to attend. Tonight, ask student health, the counseling center, and the dean of students what exists, who may join, and whether a prescribed medicine is allowed. A peer group is not medical detox.

A campus meeting can sit beside care. Mutual-help groups are not led by health care professionals. Match the off-campus level in choosing between programs. Outpatient visits, more hours each week, and overnight care are different settings. Only certified opioid treatment programs can dispense methadone for opioid use disorder, and a return to opioids after a stretch without them can be deadly because tolerance has dropped.

Telehealth can widen access to alcohol treatment and may appeal to young adults. Research has found telehealth alcohol treatment can reduce drinking. A video visit is a poor plan for severe withdrawal. Compare detox at home with medical care before you try to stop in a dorm. Stopping a benzodiazepine too fast can cause seizures.

The school file and the class schedule

Education-record rights move to the student at 18 or when the student enrolls in college. A college may tell parents of a student under 21 about a violation of an alcohol or drug rule. That is permission, not a duty. Ask the handbook what your campus does. Counseling notes can be a treatment record when they stay with the people providing treatment. An off-campus clinic is a different file. Privacy rules for substance use programs are separate from the school's file. Care for teens and young adults covers consent when the student is under 18.

FMLA is job-protected leave from work. It does not excuse classes. If you also work, read workplace leave. A college that receives federal funds may have to adjust academic requirements for a qualified student with a disability, including more time to finish. That is a request to the disability office. If the need this week is withdrawal care, call for a medical assessment first.

Search FindTreatment.gov for off-campus programs. Call or text (800) 653-9376 if you want help sorting those levels of care.

Common Questions

Does every college have a recovery program?

Colleges use a mix of strategies aimed at students and at the campus around drinking. Ask student health, the counseling center, and the dean of students what your school actually offers. A weekly meeting, a counselor, a housing option, or nothing with that name are all possible. If the answer is little or nothing, off-campus treatment is still a separate system.

Can the college tell my parents I violated an alcohol or drug rule?

A college may tell parents of a student under 21 when the student has violated a law or policy on the use or possession of alcohol or a controlled substance. The Department of Education describes this as permission, not a duty. Schools may also share education records with parents, without the student's consent, if the student is a dependent for tax purposes. They do not have to. Ask the handbook what your campus does.

Are notes at the campus counseling center private?

Sometimes they are treatment records rather than education records. That label fits records on a student 18 or older, or in college, made by a physician, psychiatrist, psychologist, or similar professional, used only for treatment, and not available to people other than treatment providers. A professional of the student's choice may review them. If the school discloses them for another purpose, ordinary education-record rules attach. An off-campus clinic is a different file.

Does FMLA let me take the semester off?

FMLA is job-protected leave from work for eligible employees of covered employers. It does not excuse classes. Ask the registrar about the school's withdrawal rules. If you also have a job, the workplace guide covers FMLA. A college that receives federal funds may have to adjust academic requirements for a qualified student with a disability. That is a request, not a guaranteed semester away.

Can I detox in my dorm room?

Stopping benzodiazepines abruptly, or cutting the dose too quickly, can cause seizures and can be life-threatening. Alcohol withdrawal seizures usually occur within 48 hours after drinking stops and can cause death or disability without medical care. Call 911 for a seizure, collapse, or trouble breathing. Call or text 988 in a mental health crisis.
