Key takeaway
A text from the old number is on your screen, and your thumb is already composing a reply. Wait. A desire to stop using can survive one unread bubble. Get to an NA meeting, even a virtual one, before you answer. If the text is a threat, call 911. You do not owe that number a conversation tonight.

The name is one you deleted and somehow still know by heart. The text is short. It does not have to be long. Your thumb wants to answer because answering is a door you remember how to open, and the rest of the night is harder. You can feel the old route starting in your chest: reply, meet, use, explain it later.
Do not answer yet. Put the phone face down and get a different voice in the hour.
NA says the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using. You still have that desire if you are scared of a text. You do not have to be clean for a first meeting. There are no dues or fees. You can listen and never mention the bubble.
A meeting before a reply
Virtual NA meetings are the right speed when leaving the house would take you past the person who texted. NA's finder points to local sites if a room is safer than your couch. The meetings search can filter to NA. Confirm the listing. This site does not verify each one. How to find NA meetings walks the search if you are too scrambled to click straight.
If the text is a threat, or someone is overdosing, call 911. Do not handle that inside a chat. NIDA says a mutual-help group is not emergency medicine.
You can block the number before the meeting starts. The block will not erase the feeling. The meeting is for the feeling.
Tonight
Leave the text unread for one hour. Join a virtual meeting and listen. Answer tomorrow only if you still want to, and only if the answer is not a meeting place. If you might hurt yourself, call or text 988. A treatment referral is (800) 653-9376. Calling is free. Treatment providers pay for the referral.

Common Questions
Should I answer so they know I am done?
You can do that tomorrow, in daylight, if you still mean it. Tonight the reply is how the old life gets a foot in the door. NA meetings are a place to sit with the urge instead. You can listen. You do not have to describe the text.
What if they say it is an emergency?
If someone is not breathing or will not wake, call 911. Do not go meet a person from that number to 'help' if helping means using. A real emergency is a phone call to 911, not a meetup.
Can I block them and still feel the pull?
Yes. Block, and the pull can remain. That is why a meeting helps. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using. There are no dues or fees. Virtual NA meetings exist if you should not leave the house while the phone is hot.
What if I already answered?
Stop the thread if you still can. Tell someone safe what you sent. Go to a meeting anyway. One reply is not a reason to finish the night the old way.
What if the text makes me want to disappear?
Call or text 988 before you answer that number. For a treatment referral, call (800) 653-9376. Calling is free. Treatment providers pay for the referral. A meeting can wait until you are safe.
